Ramblings from the Director

Dear Subscriber,

For those of you following the school's progress, I would hope that you could report a positive buzz in the industry. I'm often told how appreciative others are of our efforts to educate and promote quality. If you asked any of our class attendees I'm sure they would all agree that the SIP School is quality driven. The problem I'm faced with and one that our industry is surely in the midst of confronting, is the potential lack of quality. As the interest in SIPs grows to a rolling boil, our industry will frequently become the target of unscrupulous people. These individuals will find it easy to blend in as our industry struggles to maintain controlled growth. It would be wonderful to think that these deadbeats could be singled out and tossed from our ranks permanently. However, policing our own is as hard in the SIPs industry as it is in any other. One avenue to competing with and ultimately exposing these crafty yet uncraftsmenlike companies is through education and training. The NAHB has long seen the value in promoting education and has encouraged its members to seek further schooling. This process of elevating your own company is one of the quickest ways to stand above the uncaring and unqualified.

Just as a SIP company can improve their marketability through training, the purchaser can also improve their chance of success through training. In its simplest forms, a purchaser may seek self-paced training by surfing endlessly on the Internet. In a more committed fashion, I find many of the SIP School's attendees to be end users who are merely doing their homework prior to buying panels for their new homes.

I applaude any form of education in this industry whether by purchaser or seller. Be it by builder or installer the end result is a better end product and a stronger industry.

These ramblings are brought to you by a guy who sees the potential successes and failures that are knocking at our door. No matter which side of the door you're on, education will go a long way towards ensuring success when the door is opened.

SIP School Headed to Orlando in 2007

The SIP School has decided to hold the first Installer class of '07 in Orlando from Friday, February 2 through Tuesday, February 6. We chose the location for two reasons. First, several interested parties are located in the northern states, so what better way to take advantage of this training opportunity then to pair it with a trip to Orlando in Febuary. Second, we've selected the date for the Installer's class to immediately proceed the NAHB's International Builders Show. If you've never attended the "Big Show", now may be the perfect opportunity to combine it and some training with a midwinter southern vacation.

Check the site for class dates and descriptions www.sipschool.org

Immediately after the Builder's Show, we'll be offering the SIP School 201 Owner/Builder Workshop on Monday February 12 and Tuesday February 13. We expect these classes, like all the others, to sell out. So make your plans early and join us in Orlando.

SIP School Database

The SIP School Database is growing into a huge amount of information. The school's staff is close to opening access to all the various data gathered on all the companies within the site.

This data is a snapshot of products and services that included companies offer. If you have your company on the site and haven't provided the basic information yet, expect an email on or about Thursday, Oct. 19. This email will provide you with a link back to the site where you will answer a brief questionnaire. Once we have all the data and open the site to the viewing public, visitors will be able to compare the goods and services of your company with others on the site. If you are already listed on the site, I thank you for your assistance. If you are a member of the buying public you will find the upgrades to the site worth the wait.
